service, please!

[An essay on service in Singapore follows. If you'd rather not digest it all, scroll down to the designs below... If I don't know you did so, you won't hurt my feelings. :p]

There is a coffeeshop in AMK, which I like to walk to most Wednesday mornings for a good roti prata breakfast. Usually, what I do is walk over with the latest 8Days, order my prata, teh ping, and sit there contentedly reading my mag while I eat.

The one thing that bugs me about the coffeeshop is the lao uncle and the aunty assistant that go around taking orders for drinks. Half the time, they don't notice that I'm there, despite me waving my 8days frantically in the air. [Oi! Kio zhui ah!] I used to joke with my father, if we went together, that he must've done something to the lao uncle, something so horrendous that now the lao uncle refuses to serve the both of us drinks. And indeed, usually we'll be halfway through our breakfast before someone realises that hey! That table has no drinks!

Makes me wonder if these people are really interested in earning their keep sometimes.

Which is why, today, I felt that I crossed some kind of threshold with the lao uncle. I went there in the morning, as usual, and ordered my prata. After choosing a table, I looked around, and as usual, lao uncle and aunty assistant were nowhere around, so I prepared myself for a long wait.

Who knew, after I read a few pages of my 8days, the lao uncle silently came up to me, plonked my teh ping on the table, and just as silently took the money I had left on the table and left! Before I had even managed to order anything!

Now this is what I call service. :)

Most restaurants in Singapore [and indeed, any other place that employs service staff] get a LOT of flak for providing bad service, and sadly to say, some of this flak is justified. I remember one time in the Edo Sushi branch at Changi Airport, my friend was kept waiting for hours for her dish, [while she forlornly looked at all of us eating] only to be told later that they had run out of the dish she ordered! The waiter made some mumbled apology and we paid and left. Not even a discount given. :p

Another time, at the Country Manna at Suntec City, they totally garbled up our orders, and forgot to serve us anything. [I had a stinking feeling that night that all the waiters were new] We had to remind them 2X before the manager came out and confirmed our order with us again!

And be noted if you ever go to this sidewalk bar in Orchard next to the Thai Embassy. One of the waiters [who doesn't wear specs] there has a terrible memory, because everytime we ordered something through him, he forgot about our order, and we had to re-order through another waiter. Then again, the waitress there suffers from the same memory disorder as well.

It's practically shameful, considering that these are all respectable eating places. We pay these people 10% service charge, and this is the service we get in return. And I'm pretty sure that there are many others out there who have even more horror stories about the service staff.

Are we too picky? Is our bad attitude rubbing off on service staff? Are they underpaid? Are they totally untrained? ( This last could be true )

Well, if the above are true, then how does that explain other places who offer great service? The sales staff at The CD Store, for example, lets you lounge around in a leather sofa while the staff play the CDs you want to listen to through the store speakers. They even let obviously-cannot-buy customers like me and Quet sit in the store and listen on as well. And they're friendly, and always there to fulfil your requests.

But, you may say, they get to work in an airconditioned environment, wear nice clothes, and so the work isn't as tough as in a restaurant, where you have to remember numerous orders, walk in and out of a sweltering kitchen, face bad-tempered diners, and get lousy pay, all the while balancing plates of food on your arms.

Then how do you explain people like the lao uncle, who can recognise regular customers and remember their orders? [let's see Macdonald's try that move] How do you explain this other wanton mee stall in AMK, who recognises my dad on sight, and who will automatically serve him his order the moment he sits down? Or the economical rice stall people at the Bishan Interchange who greet every customer with a hearty greeting and can even recommend what to eat? Surely these people work in much worse conditions than the waiters at, say, Edo Sushi? [either that, or they're a whole lot more nicer to me than to other customers]

I dunno. But I do know that good service is not an impossible thing, if you wish to provide it. That's why the staff at Robinson's are continuously commended for their service. I remember that, while working there, good service ethics were always emphasized again and again to the staff. My old Robinson's colleagues were always helpful and cheery towards the customers, even, in the case of one, in the throes of migraines. Maybe that's what spurred my interest in retail.

In the meantime, we as customers live with what we can. But I daresay, for an 80cent teh ping, that was pretty good service I got. :)

Munch munch...

Just discovered Abi-station... so that's where Krystal got her icon... hee...

So I made the following:

And

Aah! Kawaii ne! I love the coloured glasses... but I dunno if I have the guts to wear it out on the streets of Orchard... :p Same thing with the bandana. If I actually wore something like that out... Can imagine Candle rolling on the floor laughing.... [Don't deny it! You will do it!]

Plus, another upload for the as-yet-non-existent portfolio, here's a postcard design commissioned by Candle.

The request was for 3 4R pictures, with all our friends in it, [the NUS gang] since, I realised to my chagrin, we have no photo with all our faces in it.

With Candle's permission, I am displaying the 1st picture that I've designed for her. Of course, the one condition was that our faces should not be displayed on my blog. Thus, I had to do a little 'airbrushing'... mwahahaha...

Hence the following:

photo of the gang

Don't we all look so happy? *grin*

I'm still having probs trying to print it out though... for some reason, my stupid bakana printer keeps printing them WRONGLY for me... like there's this white bar to the right of the postcard that always appears... kitanai! Resolution also sucks big time... *In a pissed off fit* I WILL PREVAIL over lousy printers!

Also, more birthday pix: [Why didn't I think of this while I was designing Slayer's?? Sorry, fren... :p]

Wat present?

Hang on Krystal... trying to think of more...

*On a design spree*

Boo!

Halloween special... I know we don't celebrate Halloween in Singapore, but well, it was fun doing it... :p

Something wicked this way comes...
[in an effort to not clog up my blog with too many pix, other designs are on the Funny Farm website Of course if you want to buy them *cough cough* you're always more than welcome to. *grin*]

At least I'm starting to get better at the designing.... I mean, I can actually do a pumpkin now! :p

Now, however, I face the additional obstacle of having to market my designs out in the big, big, saturated consumer cesspool that is the Internet. *Sigh* I've been trying to go through Cafepress, but not without my own obstacles. For one, Cafepress deals in USD, which makes it mucho more expensive for local customers. Every price has to be multiplied by 2, and for what? Even my primitive operation in my home can produce the same thing and for less than half the price.

The potential of it lies in being able to reach out to the American market. If I can get even a small foothold in that market through my shops, *ka-ching*! because of the currency differences. And guess who needs the money for her own domain name? Sigh............. whole buncha problems with online businesses as well...

But who am I kidding? It's not like I can afford a shop in Far East... :p

Argh, atama ga itai desu yo....

Whenever I start to create or upload a website, I inevitably start cursing, swearing, and shouting at the dumb computer. Sometimes it's a coding mistake, [which after much cursing and calming down, I'd later find] and sometimes it's something totally inexplanable. [is there even such a word?]

Today, it's the latter, sadly enough. Coding mistakes are easily rectified, but when you're DEAD CERTAIN you've already checked the BLASTED SAITEI CODE DOZENS OF TIMES AND TESTED IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND IT ALL LOOKS OK ANYWAY ON DREAMWEAVER SO WAT THE BLASTED HELL IS KITANAI TRIPOD DOING TO MY CODE...................

Yea I'm pissed. And I'm getting hungrier to boot and my pasta hasn't heated... Not in the best of moods. :(

Anywayz, do me a favour. Check out the link to my Funny Farm website [can be found on the right to my blog] and tell me just how the damned website looks to you. If the tagboard doesn't have enough space, well, email me or leave a comment at the end of this entry or something.

Just please tell me what it looks like on your end, cos it sure looks like KUSO on mine...

Birthday Pack!

A while back, Slayer 'commissioned' a Birthday Pack for a someone down under. Well, now her Funny Farm Birthday Pack is complete, and en route to her as we speak. [or rather, that's what I hope so anyway]

Pix of it: [shameless self-promotion once again]

The shirt I did.

The Dolphin Birthday Card. A little extra...

The whole pack together.

Hoping that it reaches her safely, in one piece, and intact. :p HOpe you get it, fren.

And of course, anyway who wants the same...... *cough cough* It's $12 a pack, for a shirt, and postcard.... I can even wrap it in *nice* plastic and send to the person's address for you.

Any takers? *cheshire grin*

To Yenn, Candle, and Krystal:

You good. You all good. You all very, very good.

And why I didn't buy the top? Er, cos it was like $50 over bucks... hahaha... plus I wanted to preserve the lives of every straight Singaporean male......

we will be SAVED!

OK i wanted to do a review on this, but am temporarily suffering writers' block.... wait...

aummmmm...........

fine that didn't work. Let me start off instead with some interesting stuff that happened before I watched the movie.

[First up, this has to do with menses and stuff, so if you feel your delicate sensibilities will get offended, fast forward...]

I was having lunch with Juls and Jordan at the Sakae Sushi at the Heeren. [Terrific offer going on there on. For each buffet lunch, get 2 red plates free. We had 3 plates of salmon sashimi between the 3 of us. Ah oishiiyo.....] After a while, I felt a need to go to the toilet to change my pad. [2nd day yah, gets a bit *hmph* after a while]

I start searching my bag. Doo-dee-do-dee-do... where're my pads...

Where are my pads?

WHERE ARE MY PADS????

OMG I went out with 2 guys on my 2nd day and I forgot to bring them and it's been wat, 4,5 hours already??

I search through my bag, taking out the books I had in it, while the guys continue eating. Finally, I realise that I really DID forget to bring them, and that somehow before the movie, I'd have to get Juls to go with me to a pharmacy to buy them. The thought of all the possible dumb jokes Juls could make about this makes me groan inwardly.........

Anyway, I don't say any of the previous out loud to the guys. However, while we were walking out, and Jordan was some distance ahead, I ask Julian if we could go to Watson's before the movie started. [Jordan wasn't joining us for the movie]

Julian leans slyly over to me and asks, "You forgot to bring your pad is it?"

WTF???? "HOW THE HELL DID U KNOW???" I *almost* shout out to him.

"I don't know! I just know! When you were searching through your bag, the thought came to me that you forgot to bring your pads!"

"WTF YOU MEAN YOU JUST KNOW???"

"I just knew! That's all! I don't know how!"

OMG OMG OMG I seriously think i hang out too much with this idiot. Will someone PLEASE intro me some NORMAL guys.................

Anyways, the movie, yah..........

Saved!

If ever there's a movie to really get me burned in Hell, I suppose this would be a nominee for the title...

Meet Mary. Mary studies at American Eagles High School, a fundamentalist Christian high school in the States. Mary is also part of the Christian Jewels, the requisite cool-girl gang in every high school, headed by the extreme-bitch-ina-holy-facade Hillary Faye. Mary has a boyfriend Dean.

Who confesses to her that he may be gay.

OOPS!!! Mary is so shocked by the news, she bumps herself on the head, and sinks to the bottom of the swimming pool.

Where she receives a "vision" from "christ" telling her to "help" Dean in every way she can.

[There's a reason for all the ""s, and it will be better understood if you guys watched the movie]

So she tries her best to help Dean become, well, heterosexual. Finally, she decides to have sex with him to "de-gay-ify" him. Well, OBVIOUSLY she gets pregnant with his kid, which makes for a lot of madcap religious jokes around the school. Especially when she mixes with the castouts of the school, whom the head bitch calls "Satan's Crew". This includes a rebellious chainsmoking Jew, [a jew at a Christian school!] and the wheelchair-bound brother of the Head Bitch.

If anything, it's tempting to dload this movie, burn 100s of copies and send them to say, City Harvest Church. It plays on LOADS of Christian stereotypes, and parodies them to the extreme. When you see the beatific look on Head Bitch as she sings, you just want to snort along with the Jew. And since she's the Head Bitch, well, obviously, she practices a very hypocritical form of Christianity, in which I am right, and if you think I'm wrong, you must be part of Satan.

An interesting example? The pastor of the school confides to Head Bitch that Mary may be going through some emotional difficulties, and to gently help her through it. Head Bitch responds by kidnapping Mary in a van, and performing an exorcism on her. OMG. Well, of course Mary calls her a lunatic, and in a fit of 'holy' anger, Head Bitch throws the Bible at Mary's back! Now if that's not a metaphor for fundamentalists worldwide, I don't know what is......

In the process of the movie, Mary realises that nothing, not even religion, is as clear-cut as everyone, even the pastor, makes it out to be. What Would Jesus Do? Indeed, nobody really knows. And the end message of the movie is: to know WWJD, each one has to find his own way, make his own path.

And THAT is the only way to God. :p

Highly recommended for Hellbound Yenn to watch... hee... you'll like it.

Quick bites

Chomp chomp...

1) Right after last week's post on how f**ked up love was, Dragonfly msn-ed me:

D: So what are you going to do about Dragonfly? Hahaha

??? Does the guy have a 2nd sense of when I'm talking about him on my blog? Apparently he was surfing the net when he accidentally clicked on the link to my blog and saw the nick in the first line. What the...

And the answer to the question is... a secret of my own. Hahaha... :p

2) Sale at Seiyu has been fantastic. Already I've bought a brown top, at the Bugis outlet, and *cough cough* some underwear I was badly in need of. The whole store is on 20% off and it's ending soon, so buy whatever you can!

3) Went shopping at Bugis on Saturday night with Yenn and Candle, ostensibly to help Candle shop for a pair of casual shoes, but in typical female style, ended up trying on everything other than shoes.

We went into the Bysi shop, where I tried on a brown, long-sleeved top, with lacing at a generously-cut bodice. [so I wanted to try on something different...]

Walked out of the fitting room, only to be regaled by Candle's fit of shaking laughter.

"What??"

"The top ah... draws a LOT of attention to your bust. " And she went off in fits of laughter again.

"Ok fine... but does it make me look fat or anything?"

"Friend, with THAT top, NO ONE'S gonna be looking at ANYTHING but your bust."

The joys of being generously endowed...

Love is a stranger thing than I thought...

After talking to a couple of my friends about a) boyfriend problems b) parents-of-the-boyfriend problems c) singlehood problems and d) what I should finally do about Dragonfly, the above title is the conclusion that I have come to.

Love, is a strange, strange thing.

I recently found a book at the library titled, "Love at First Sight", published by DK. Not a trashy romance novel, but a informative book about what kind of people we would find attractive, and why we find them attractive.

The book states 3 theories on why we find some people attractive.

1) Echoism - People whose features harmonise our own are deemed more attractive.
2) Harmonism - People whose features are symmetrical are deemed more attractive.
3) Patronism Copulist- People whose features are most similiar to the first bond in our lives are deemed more attractive. So, for example, if you were close to your mom when you were young, you would look for someone similiar in features to her.

Pretty interesting no? The book was even chock-full of pictures of celebrity couples, comparing which couple would make it, and which wouldn't.

So apparently, our decision on finding a mate depends rather heavily on these unconscious perceptions of people's faces. Because your brain already has a checklist in it, every time you look at someone to check out their potential [or beoh them, to put them in plain terms] you're actually subsconsciously ticking off those items on your mental checklist.

However, compatibility obviously goes beyond the physical. We also check out a person's sensation-seeking levels, as mentioned in a previous post. According to that other study, couples who have the same level of sensation-seeking are more likely to stay together longer. This is because their sense of adventure, or exploration, mirrors each other. They are more likely to be more communicative with each other, and open-minded with each other.

And then you have the other societal cues that are also indoctrinated in us from birth. Our [potential] husband must be able to support the family, pull in a good salary, be faithful and loyal, be a good father, and generally help with the housework. All these also stem from primitive urges, very caveman-like.

We think of ourselves as a civilised people, but we never realise how caveman-like we still are at heart. Because women are the ones who carry the child through pregnancy, they are also the only ones who are sure that the child is theirs. Hence, they have a stake in caring for the child, because that's the only way their genes will get passed down. That's also why, through the years, women have also been delegated the household chores, and the rearing of the children. Because they are positive of the 'ownership' of the child.

Men, however, can never be 100% certain that the child is theirs, because they didn't give birth to it. [well, er, nowadays, they can more or less be, due to DNA testing] Thus, they feel less of a need to participate in the long term care of the child. It pretty much depends on how the man feels is the best way to sow his wild oats, and hence pass on his genes. He can either f**k as many women as he wants, hereby ensuring a number of offspring bearing his genes, or he can dedicate his time to one child, hereby ensuring that that child will survive to a ripe old age.

In this way, this is why young men are, well, so ready to spread the love. Because since they're young, their best chances of genetic survival is to spread the love around as much as possible, so that they have as many of their kids running around. And unfortunately, the instincts of the women they f**k are geared towards long term care. So men will tend to marry later and have kids, because by then, the chances of that kid surviving will be higher.

What an unfortunate match. But that's the way to keep the human race running.

So you see just how abysmally difficult it is to find a perfect match?
1) Your mate has to have the right set of features
2) Your mate has to have the same level of adventure as yourself
3) Your mate [for women] has to be old enough to want to devote themselves to long term childcare rather than massive spreading of sperm.

Complicating the matter are other things, like the human chemical makeup that gears everyone towards sex. Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and the usual estrogen/testosterone, all running around in our blood, urging us to go forth and f**k. All the while with the above subconscious cues wired in our brain.

Let's not talk about the esoteric part yet, which brings in the zodiacs, western and eastern, the 8 characters, the palms and others...

Let's also not talk yet about the implications for homosexuality, asexuality, transexuality, whatever-sexuality.

And we see

Just wat a blardy f**ked up thing love is.

*Sigh*

Yenn: Postcards done. And these look much better than the previous ones. :) I think I'll stick to the style of white background with colourful animals. Looks nice and doesn't gimme as many heart attacks while printing...

These are how the cards look after printing: [cheap promotional gimmick]

Quet: does this look like your cat?? I tink I've gone the colour wrong again... :p

Don't disturb.

And a new one... the Doncare Cat...

He looks pissed off, doesn't he?

Yea yea I know I haven't been updating. *whine* Reasons for this include:

1) Increased lessons and worry over students' exams. During this week, I have 2 PSLE kids, [one of whom happily broke his left arm 2 weeks ago] 1 N' Level student, who, whenever she does an accounts exercise, breaks up into a frenzy. Her favourite lines are, "I'm so gonna die for my exam" and "I hate maths/accounts"

Sometimes I feel like my job includes teenage counselling and motivation.

2) Total lack of inspiration. It is as if the wells of my talent dried up with the rain. Anyone noticed, the weather in Singapore has been FANTASTIC again? Clear blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and the most amazing afternoon winds... but total dearth of artistic inspiration. Bleah. Maybe it was the misery of the rainy weather that inspired me... damn...

All right, all right... excuses excuses... but I tried... *whine*

Anyway, something off the tracks a bit, which I pinched from Slayer

THREE THINGS THAT SCARE ME:
01. The sight of my finger bleeding. For some reason, a pin prick on my finger tips has the power to make me nauseous, giddy, lose partial sight, and all blood from my face. This is easily verified by Quet and the rest.
02. Heights. Ironic, considering I live on the top floor, but it's more to do with whether I feel a sense of stability or not. Hence, looking down from my balcony, with a solid concrete wall is perceived safe. Standing in the middle of the skybridge at KLCC is DEFINITELY NOT perceived safe.
03. Dying a cold, lonely old maid, and having my body discovered days later by neighbours, after it has been gnawed through by my cats.

THREE PEOPLE WHO MAKE ME LAUGH:
01. Stupid people
02. Funny people
03. People who think they're funny, but in actuality are being stupid. [although some may say I come into this category myself]

THREE THINGS I LOVE:
01. Friends
02. Cats
03. Art

THREE THINGS I HATE:
01. Stupid people who hurt other people. Terrorists, psychos, fanatics all come under this category.
02. People who think that I'm not a productive member of society because I don't work at a desk and contribute to CPF. Hey people, heard of 'tolerating differences'?
03. People who think they can push me around to make themselves feel big. Just because I don't react back doesn't mean I'm taking it silently. I'm actually plotting your murder in advance. [Beware the quiet ones...]

THREE THINGS ON MY DESK: [Oh freak, there's way more rubbish on it than these 3]
01. Laptop - Old faithful, though I don't always use him much now
02. Books - comics I've read, books I've read, and other books I intend to read.
03. Photos - of friends lah, then?

THREE THINGS I'M DOING RIGHT NOW:
01. Doing this quiz
02. Listening to music on radio
03. Chatting with Quet and Candle

THREE THINGS I WANT TO DO BEFORE I DIE:
01. Find a boyfriend - Gimme some of that lovin' feelin'...
02. Become an acclaimed artist. Doesn't matter whether graphic, comic or artist.
03. Travel the world

THREE THINGS I CAN DO:
01. Eat
02. Drink
03. Sleep

THREE WAYS TO DESCRIBE MY PERSONALITY:
01. Crappy [this is probably popular opinion among my friends...]
02. Indecisive [oh, you should see me when I'm thinking of what to eat for lunch...]
03. Unique [Isn't everyone?]

THREE THINGS I CAN'T DO:
01. Cartwheels
02. Pushups
03. Bungee jumping. *shudder*

THREE THINGS I THINK YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO:
01. Good advice [subjective though]
02. The Voice of God, especially if you notice all time has stopped around you, or a bush is mysteriously burning in front of you.
03. Music. How can one ever live without it?

THREE THINGS I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO EVER:
01. Bad advice
02. The Voice of Satan. Bad idea, and never sign your soul away.
03. Noise. Why damage your ears further?

THREE THINGS I SAY THE MOST:
01. Fuck
02. Shit
03. Oh my god
[Damn, why are they are swear words?]

THREE OF YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE FOODS:
01. Potatoes. Atkins will so turn over...
02. Fresh, raw salmon. Oh god love that succulent pinkish flesh..
03. Haagen Dasz's tiramisu ice cream. *food orgasm*

THREE THINGS YOU'D LIKE TO LEARN:
01. French
02. Violin
03. Why some people are so stupid

THREE BEVERAGES YOU DRINK REGULARLY:
01. Water. Sky Juice.
02. Ice lemon tea.
03. Green tea.

THREE SHOWS YOU WATCHED WHEN YOU WERE A KID:
01. Cartoons.
02. Channel 8 dramas
03. [er, that's about it. I spent most of my childhood reading comics...]

RANDOM QUESTIONS:
1. Spell your name backwards - htalehk [wat the heck for??]
2. How did you get your livejournal name? Er, I'm on Blogger, but anyway, at the time I was starting the blog, I was bored, I like to slack.... *TINK!*

Stop the Rain

These few days the weather has been absolutely MISERABLE, what with the endless overcast skies, the continuous drizzle, and the upping of the humidity the previous 2 factors have caused. The start of the rainy season in Singapore has started. Oh glory be.

You can tell, I hate rain. I hate it I hate it I hate it. If not for the fact that all life as we know it depends on those pathetic drops for water, I'd be petitioning for an end to rainy weather as we know it.

Why do I hate rain? Well, let's see: I'm either stuck at home when it rains, or I'd have to lug around an umbrella wherever I go in order not to get TOO wet. [note I didn't say 'to get wet'. This is because even if you carry an umbrella when it rains, you will inevitably get wet at one spot of your body or another. Makes me wonder why we carry the bloody things in the first place]

Then, the umbrella doesn't cover your FOOTWEAR. So your feet get stinkin', drippin' wet. If you're wearing open toes, it means that your tootsies get liberally splashed with rainwater while you walk. If you're wearing shoes, it means that all the moisture gets stuck inside, and the resulting stink is likely to kill you and everyone in your vicinity the moment you take off your shoes.

And god help you if you're walking out of the house when you've just washed your hair. The humidity just loves wet hair. So all the stray little water droplets will just rush to your hair, and make their permanent residence there. Your nice, clean hair will end up sticky, grimy, and oily and hereby wasting all the effort you would have spent on it.

And these are just the personal inconveniences. What about the larger effects to the world? Rain causes water. Excess water causes floods. Floods will destroy property, livestock, crops, and generally make a lot of people's lives miserable. Then at sea, you have tsunamis, which lead to ships sinking and damage to the marine cycle, as fish are thrown about and coral reefs are destroyed.

Does all the trouble stop when the rain does? Nooooo.... because after rain, you have mud. And mud causes mudslides, landslides, and a lot of business for greedy spa owners. That's more property, livestock, crops and lives destroyed, because of a whole ton of mud that decided to leave the nest and explore the world.

And even after you clear all the mud, you're at danger of getting fungal infections from all that soil.

You see the danger we're in from rain? Stop rain now.

On the bright side though....

I finally sold one of my funny farm merchandise! Somebody bought a shirt off my cafepress shops, some unknown from the US, and I have my first sale! *Air of happiness*

And I made...... all of US$4.02.

*peng* *bish* *poing*

Well, it's a start... ;)

Btw, I'm doing it for Quet, but there's something that looks off about the goat. Can you all gimme feedback?

Kambing ahead

Haven't been in here for a while, so looooong post ahead...

First up, here's 2 pix of the crab Candle suggested:

Don't Crap with Me

And:

Did Someone Say Chilli??

Still trying to think of more though. What on earth would a crab say?

*zen mood* To be One with the Crab......

PS I know crabs have 8 legs k? I was just too lazy to paste an extra pair of legs in... bwahahaha

What else, what else.... has been going in my life....

Well, I watched New Police Story with Dragonfly just on Monday. Erm, we kinda met up for a morning walk at the Park at 8am, [privilege of the student and the slacker] so we walked from my end of the Park all the way down to the other side, after crossing the road. That's like the most exercise I've done for a long, looong time...

Then we walked down to J8, had brunch, and suddenly, he's like, "Hey! Why don't we watch a movie?"

Huh? Ok lor...

One thing about Librans: They are bossy, in a gentle way. Which is to say, they'll tell you what to do, but instead of whacking you with a cane to do it, they'll persuade, they'll plead, all the while holding you with the reins while gently pulling in their direction. [Read this in some Yahoo! Horoscope thing...]

And Pisceans are mutable, fluid, and move where the waves take us. So if you ask me out of the blue to watch a movie, [Right in front of the theatre, to boot] if I can make it, and have the cash to spare, I'm like whatever lor... So we ended up watching New Police Story. [on his suggestion, may I add]

Thank goodness I don't watch much Jackie Chan movies, because general opinion I've heard seems to be that all Jackie Chan movies are the same. So well, at least for me, it's something a bit more refreshing lah. :p

Jackie Chan plays this police inspector who got his entire team killed while going after a gang of bank robbers. Unable to forgive himself, he ends up drinking himself into a pathetic wreck of a man, until he's found by Nicholas Tse, a detective who's been assigned as his partner.

Tse informs him that the gang of bank robbers has resurfaced, and that he's the only one who can stop him. [yah, duh...] So Chan gets back into action, saving Tse, his girlfriend, and generally the whole of HK in typical, clownish-action-hero stunts.

Stunt choreography is good, not surprising, considering that the Jackie Chan stunt team is very highly skilled. Some stuff really leave you thinking, "Is that possible??" like when Chan scales up walls with his hands and legs, *Jaw drops* or when he fights in a bar, and uses chairs, bartops, bottles, glasses etc etc in order to whack the bad guys to pieces. [Which I'm pretty sure is a signature move of Chan as well]

Plot wise, DUH!!! Some things in the film really left me shaking my head in total disbelief, because it's so bloody incredible that I refuse to believe that such a thing was even possible. Like when he storms the building where the gang is supposed to be hiding with 10 armed men. Wah liao eh! Of course all kena mati lah! The whole thing just screams TRAP! TRAP! TRAP!

But then again, that's why it's a movie. Please surrender part of your brain for entertainment purposes. ;)

On the positive side, though, it's also blardy farnee like nobody's business.... Some parts really left me reeling with laughter, even, apparently, when no one else got the joke...

DF: You know there was one part in the movie, where you were laughing your head off, and yet you were the only one in the theatre laughing?

Me: What? No lah!

DF: Yeah! There was! You were laughing by yourself, and I was wondering what you were laughing at, and then only after a while, the theatre started laughing together with you!

Well... that just proves that I get the joke faster than most people do......

Which reminds me, I owe someone a birthday treat...... and I forgot...... *groan*

Rest of Monday passed by peacefully with tuition...

Then Tues night, I got a sudden call from Candle and Quet for dinner, so went down to Orchard after my tuition.

The scary thing about corporate life is what it does to you. After working in Kaypoh Co. [names changed to avoid me or Candle getting sued] for about a month, Candle's flame seems a bit, well, subdued. [or more plainly, I told her she looked as if she was about to collapse then and there] And this isn't even the peak of the workload for her yet... Hope you have enough vitamin C tablets to see you through, fren....

So it was that they couldn't stay late, and after they left, I went browsing in Borders.

Happy me just got paid for tuition that day, [scent of money so sweet....ahhh] so happy me decided to treat myself to a book, because I hadn't bought a book for a long time.

There were some limitations though. I have to restrict myself to 1 book, and it had to be below $20, because of budget constraints.

WAH FREAKIN' LIAO. It was almost impossible to accomplish lor! I went walking up and down the aisles, and not that there were no books to buy, but WAY TOO MANY books I wanted to buy! Oh, this one, I've been eyeing it for months now, should I get it? But then again, this looked good too, how about this? Oh, and this one! I'm been wanting this for ages! But will I read them again? Should I get fiction? Or something more serious, that I can really use, instead of just read? Photoshop book? Art book? Comic book? Novel? Magazine? What? WHAT? WHAT????

This is why I keep asking for book vouchers on my birthdays......

So in the end, I ended up with this cute little book:

Wicked Japanese, by Howard Tomb! Only $10! And full of totally unconventional Jap phrases that you will probably never see in any other phrase book! Necroz bought this little gem almost last year, and I was so enthralled by it, I made a vow to buy it if I ever saw it again, and here it was!

So why I like the book? Here's a sample of the phrases from it: [Note to Yenn, Krynn, or anyone who understands Jap: The phrases aren't translated exactly as they are in Jap, so some parts may sound a bit wrong, but the rough meaning is there]

For [supposed] use in Japanese religious and business meetings:

Kono okane wa donaru no desu ka?
- Where does the money go?

Kyuka wa namakemono to sashimi mitaini yawana gaijin no kangaeru koto da.
- Vacation is for hooligans and foreigners as soft as sashimi.

For when watching a Noh play:

Harawata no kobore guai ni hin ga atta!
- How gracefully their guts fell to the floor!

kazoku sorrote no seppuku ga yokatta.
- I loved the part where the whole family disemboweled themselves.

And my personal favourite, when eating ambulatory food:

Ebi no idaina saigo desu!
How the honorable shrimp struggle as they choke to death!

Good gods! How can you not love this book??

Sensation Seeking

Candle: Remember what I spoke to you about sensation seeking the other time?

From www.bbc.co.uk:

Sensation seeking is a personality trait expressed in behaviour as a tendency to seek varied, novel, complex and intense sensations and experiences and to take physical risks for the sake of having such experiences.

These experiences could take the form of extreme adventure activities such as skydiving, snowboarding and mountain climbing. But the trait can also express itself in high drug, alcohol or tobacco use.

Men generally score higher than women on the total score and on all the subscales except Experience Seeking. Sensation Seeking Scale scores increase during childhood, peak in the late teens or early twenties, and thereafter decrease steadily with age.

People with similar scores on the Sensation Seeking Scale also tend to be more romantically compatible with each other.

Divorced males score higher than single and married males, and divorced and single females score higher than married females.

And well, my sensation seeking score is:

Thrill and adventure seeking - you score 2 out of 10
This consists of items expressing desires to engage in sports or activities involving some physical danger or risk such as mountain climbing, parachute jumping, scuba diving, speeding in a car, etc.
=> the only one i'll consider doing is speeding in a car. Make that a real fast car down a long, empty highway. Oh yeah...
The rest, I'd have to say, ARE YOU FLIPPIN" NUTS?? Well, scuba diving is relatively safer, but still damn ex... sorry Quet... :p

Experience seeking - you score 6 out of 10
This descibes the desire to seek new experiences through the mind and senses by living in a nonconforming life style with unconventional friends, and through travel.
=> This I can agree with. It's fun to make new, interesting friends, and to travel to new places.

Disinhibition - you score 6 out of 10
This describes the need to disinhibit behaviour in the social sphere by drinking, partying and seeking variety in sexual partners.
=> drinking, partying, yeah I have tendencies. Seeking varieties in sexual partners.....er i'm not so sure...

Boredom susceptibility - you score 2 out of 10
This indicates an aversion for repetitive experience of any kind, routine work, or even dull or predictable people. Other items indicate a restless reaction when things are unchanging.
=> so basically, I'm a dull, boring person who doesn't mind other dull, boring persons. This is so sad...

Your total sensation seeking score is 16 out of 40

So the idea of the sensation-seeking principle is that people who have the same sensation-seeking level tend to be more compatible. Which makes sense in a way, cos imagine a highly adventurous guy, who likes to wakeboard, scuba dive, and all other extreme sports, getting attached to a homebody girl, who likes to potter around the house, water her plants and cook.

Er...............

Love is in the Stars

Interestingly, the horoscope I received in my email today:

Feeling frisky? Well, if you're not now, you will be soon. This month is about to be filled with love like you've never seen.
=> Oh really? How come I never noticed?

Libra is the sign of love and relationships, and we've got four planets -- an unusually large number -- making their presence known in the sign this month: the Sun, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter.
=> blah blah blah... technical horoscope stuff...

Technically, you started feeling the effects on September 14th when the Moon moved into Libra, but things really get going a week later on the 22nd.
=> hey that's today! Nothing happened though... cheaters! liars!

The Sun goes into Libra on the 22nd, which on its own isn't unusual, but you'll start to notice some loving feelings creeping into your life -- you'll find you're even more charming, approachable and likable than usual.
=> Oh, I didn't think it was possible to get any more charming, approachable and likable than I already was... *once again, ducks the rotten tomatoes thrown at her*

Then on the 24th, Lady Luck (in the form of Jupiter) will take up residence in your love life, and she'll stay there for roughly a year.
=> i hope she doesn't create a mess while she's there.

As if that's not enough, Mars, the planet of action, will become a powerful force on the 26th, helping you take romantic matters into your own hands.
=> so basically, i get tired of waiting? oh oh...

Finally, Mercury, the ruler of communication, smiles down on you, allowing you to converse effortlessly with whomever you desire.
=> oh that's good.... haha...

Thanks to all this planetary action, you're charming, lucky in love, making romance happen and communicating beautifully with your lover. If you play your cards right, you could make these next four weeks some of the best of your life. Mars will certainly do what it can to make sure you don't just sit back and wait for love to happen, and here at Astrology.com, we're prepared to do the same!
=> well they certainly know how to make a customer feel welcome don't they?

So where's all the loving happening then? *Looks around*

In other news....

Begging Teen?

Read this article first for the background info:
http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/top/story/0,4136,73441,00.html?

Now for my comments/rants:

Eh PLEASE LAH. You're young, you're healthy, what the heck is holding u back from getting a job? You're just plain lazy lah...

You have no ambition, you have no goals, and you expect your parents and family to support you for the rest of your life?

Even if you get a job as a toilet cleaner, it's a job, you earn your own money and you can feed yourself. There's no shame in that whatsoever.

The crux of it is that you just can't be bothered. And that's so damn sad.

How can some people do this? Just be totally bochup about the world around them? Even a slacker like me believes in the importance of at least basic self-sufficiency, and can realise that my parents won't always be around to support me. Even though I only teach tuition, I still earn my own money.

But this guy... he can't be bothered to earn his own cash, and he wants to be dependent on people his whole life. He won't even consider the possibility that one day, his parents will die. He'll have to beg for real. He might lose his house.

Not only that, but he's picky, to boot. He has to work within walking distance, and he thinks transport is a waste of money, notwithstanding the fact that thousands of Singaporeans travel to work each morning, and that transport costs take up a minimal portion of your income, even as a toilet cleaner.

Some people... you just can't understand them. I'd really wanna poke this guy deep and probe him for exactly WHY he wants to go begging.

And people think Singaporeans are thoughtless people who won't contribute to charity? Look at this guy. You feel like donating to him meh? He's my age and he has at least secondary school education. I definitely won't feel like giving him money lor...

Gods I don't believe some people...... *rendered speechless*

The noise is killing me.... There are some repair works going on at my block right now, and 2 Indian workers are right now hanging outside my front balcony, drilling something..... oh god the noise......

Haven't done one of these in a while so here goes:

Summary of Strategists

Quiet, easy-going and intellectually curious => Quite true

Use logical, objective thinking to find original solutions to problems => Not so sure abt this, but hey, if you say so...

Think of themselves as bright, logical and individualistic => I'm smart and I know it.... haha... *ducks the tomatoes thrown*

May be impractical, forgetting practical issues, such as paying bills or doing the shopping => Oh definitely......

More about Strategists
Strategists are quiet people who like to get to the heart of tough problems on their own and come up with innovative solutions.
=> I'd agree with this one. It's easier generally to think up your own solution than to haggle between 8 different opinions. Remember how those looooong project discussions in NUSSUX?

They analyse situations with a sceptical eye and develop ways of measuring everything, including themselves.
=> That's why I'm addicted to these tests. Hahaha...

Strategists are the group most likely to say they are unhappy in their job, according to a UK survey.
=> Gods, THIS is sad...

Strategists are generally easy-going. => Yup, I'm one of the most sui pian people you'll ever meet.

They are intellectually curious and enjoy abstract ideas. => Oh sure, we debate about all kind of philosophical issues, like why doth yonder construction workers make such racket?

Sometimes they like thinking of a solution to a problem more than taking practical steps to solve it. => We leave the hard work to others

In situations where they can't use their talents, are unappreciated, or not taken seriously, Strategists may become negatively critical or sarcastic.
=> Strange, I thought this applied to just about everybody.

Under extreme stress, Strategists could be prone to inappropriate, tearful or angry outbursts.
=> How could you say that about me???? BWAAAH!!!! MEANIE!

Strategists may be insensitive to the emotional needs of others or how their behaviour impacts the people around them.
=>Frankly my dears, I don't give a kuso.

Strategist Careers
Strategists are often drawn to technical or scientific careers, where specialist knowledge is required.
=> Sorry dears, anything science-y or tech-y is soooooo out for me....

They also seem to enjoy jobs that involve long-term planning, abstract thinking or design.
=> Well this could be ok...

Wanna try it out?

More Holiday Rants Again

I've also been doing some online research for hostels in Thailand, and I've actually come up with some figures so insanely cheap, I wonder if I'm doing it right.

What it boils down to is that with the budget airlines, and online hostel booking, I can go to Bangkok and Chiangmai for 7 days for about SGD300-400? Is that right? I feel like something's wrong somewhere, but my figures are all including airport tax and other extras, so it's essentially the final figure for the trip.

But is it possible to go there that cheaply?? When I told some people that my budget for the trip was about SGD500 I got laughed at, because everybody told me that no way I could go 2 cities for that little amount.

The only drawback is that my figures for the accomo are listed in AUD, but that isn't that far off from SGD either.... so.... what's wrong here? I don't wanna go all the way there and find out about some hidden surcharge that I din see in Singapore....

Meanwhile, Dragonfly is also psychoing me to go Krabi with him, 'cos so far it's only him and 2 frens going so it's a way to even out the nos at least. I'm in 2 minds about this. On one hand, the beaches of Krabi are legendary and it'll be cool to get some sand and surf... *remembering Redang wistfully*

On the other hand.... airfare costs will take a rocket ride into the sky if I attempt to go with him, and then to Bangkok and Chiangmai. Owch. We're talking airfare to Krabi from Spore, then from Krabi to Bangkok, and then to Chiangmai, and then back to Singapore. :(

Oh god I'm so tempted to screw it all, and go by myself already.......

This is another of those days where I feel I'm a walking disaster again...

Tried to make chicken curry today this time, thinking the directions on the back looked easy enough. Liar! Liars all of them!

First disaster came while I was frying the paste in the pan. The oil may have been quite hot, because the minute I squeezed the paste out, [yes, it was an instant paste. I'm not quite ready to make it from scratch yet. :P] SPLATTER! SPLATTER! SPIT! This fountain of oil came spraying out of the pot, and I only managed to snatch my hands away just in time. [oh no, not another burn..] Then, to my utter dismay, it went on to spit hot oil all over my stove, my sink, clean pots, clean plates......

And to think the only thing going through my mind was: My god, mummy's gonna kill me............

The 2nd disaster came with the potatoes. [Why? Why? Is it because I love to eat you guys too much?] Lesson learned: Potatoes take a waaaaay longer time to cook than chicken meat. So if you put the 2 together at the same time, by the time your chicken has been overcooked umpteen times, your potatoes will STILL remain half raw.

Argh. Kuso bloody hell.

3rd disaster came with the coconut milk. OK, I SWEAR I read the instructions right, which called for 2 cups of coconut milk. But when I poured in the milk, it turned out to be an insanely high amount of milk! The should've-been orange curry turned a snowy white mixture, paler than laksa! Oh, WATASHI NO KAMI DESU!!!!!

Well, obviously it was a pretty disgusting mix, so I searched around in the kitchen and found a pack of curry powder mother had bought long time ago. Arigato, kami! I poured a liberal amount of powder into the mixture, and finally got it to look somewhat a curry-ish orange.

The only thing is that the curry had the consistency of a carbonara sauce. It's THAT bloody thick. And the potatoes were still undercooked. *peng on the floor*

So...... apparently I came up with a recipe for a curry sauce in my efforts to make a curry, because it tastes all right with bread, but on its own, it's bloody thick, like milkshake. :p

*Sigh* Ah well.......... back to the drawing board............ and maybe I should make that literal in my case......

Introducing the Doncare Cat...

For lack of a better name...

I don't know how, but in the last 4 hours I managed to
- Read the newspapers
- Do the laundry

As an aside, I swear my dad's booby-trapping the house. He had this bamboo pole innocently lying on those hook thingys we use to hang clothes in the back balcony, so I innocently took it down.

How was I to know, it was actually holding up a buncha other bamboo poles, and so the moment I took down the pole, the rest of them came crashing down onto my head. 5 of them, read 'em and weep.

I think I had just enough time to cover my head and scream as they tumbled down onto me. No bumps, bruises, thank god, but a slightly shaken me, and once again, a buncha curses at my dad, for putting those things in such a dangerous position, where idiots like me could bring them avalanching onto themselves.

I swear, I have no idea what he's thinking sometimes.

- Heat up and eat lunch.
- Blog. ( Read entry below on yet another culinary disaster )
- Do up the Funny Farm website.
- Do the Doncare Cat range.

I don't know where I suddenly got the energy for all this. Just 2 days ago, I was languishing in a state of atrophy, [is there such a word? Did I use it right?] and suddenly, I was afire again. Hm.

Anyway, yah, before I forget, check it out:
The Doncare Cat

New Website!

Finally launching... The Funny Farm website..... after much blood, sweat, tears and much more cursing and swearing...

I KNOW the website is simple, I KNOW not all the graphics are there, and I KNOW it could look better. Gimme time pple... I'll improve. =p

But for now, at least they're on a proper website, instead of just dumped into my photobucket album. =) =) =)

Another thing: I signed up with Cafepress.com for the designs on the site, so actually, you guys can buy merchandise over the Net with the designs. WARNING THOUGH: PRICES ON CAFEPRESS ARE ALL IN USD. Which means that any price there will be DOUBLED IN SGD. This warning is only on my blog, so take note pple! If you really want shirts or postcards with the designs, please email me instead of ordering through there...

But if you wanna order some of the stuff through there, hey, I don't mind either... :P

Another Culinary Disaster saved by Grandmother

At this time, I should be out shopping with Quet, but since it's raining, and neither of us wanna get wet, we're both still comfortably at home. :p

So today I had another lame-brained, whydidithinkofthat, idea to cook something for lunch, instead of going out. For one, my finances were getting tighter, and cooking will allow me to eat more stuff at home. For two, I need more practice in cooking something other than pasta. For three, I felt adventurous.

My idea was for a potato-mince stew, recipe drawn up from watching Grandmother cook years, years ago. I was pretty sure I knew the rough technique to go about doing it.

[I realise that my cooking techniques are all very JamieOlivermeetsSurrealChef. I come up with recipes by vaguely thinking, "Oh, that should work..." and the way I add seasoning and stuff is by throwing in an amount that looks ok to me. Forget the measuring cups and spoons.]

Firstly, prep the ingredients. Slice and dice the onions, slice the potatoes, and soak the mince in a buncha soy sauce. So far so good, and it was even fun pounding the sauce into the raw mince. Sorta like working with play dough.

Secondly, fry the potatoes, and THIS is where the trouble started. To fry food properly, you have to get the oil to be HOT, and when I poured in the 2nd batch of potatoes, some of them must've still been quite wet, cos this DOLLOP of oil just jumped right out of the pot and onto my hand.

ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!! PAIN!! TONG!! TIAH!!! ITAI!! SAKIIIIIT!!!!! ARGH! ARGH! ARGH!

Somewhere within 2 1/2 seconds I managed to curse at the pain, shift my burnt hand to the sink, switch on the tap and allow the cool, cool ( aaaaahhhh...... ) water to flow onto the burn.

Something I did must've worked because thank goodness, no huge bubbles formed, and although it hurt like crazy after that, it was still a hurt I could bear with. *nurses her burn*

Anyway, thank goodness the rest of the mince and onions went into the pot without much trouble. :p In fact, it was a strange thing because as the soy-sauce soaked mince went into the pot, an aroma rose up that was strangely familiar.

It was the aroma of my grandmother's cooking once again, my favourite dish that she used to cook for me every week. So familiar, and so comfortably nostalgic was the smell, I could almost imagine my grandmother resurrected in my kitchen, standing over me, watching me cook. For that one instance, the dead became alive, to mingle with the living, and I knew my cooking was on track.

The mince now sits in a pot in my fridge and is lunch enough for the next 2 days. It's a little salty, so next time I'll add a bit of sugar to it or something to take away the saltiness. Meanwhile, it's nice to know that I wasn't the total disaster in the kitchen I always thought I was. :)

And I'm sure Grandmother would approve.

Gangstas in da house... The Gangsta Range...

And my favourite...

How is it that when pple give me suggestions for perfectly innocent animals, I can always twist their suggestions into something else? Must be a gift with me...

Then again... what does that say for my tuition skills? ......

b4 i forget...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KRYSTAL!!!

Will have something ready for you...... sorry nearly forgot.....:P sumimasen.... but will have something for you when u come back to singapore....

FUnny Farm again

Everyone likes dolphins. Why dolphins? But once again, here's my own twisted take on the animal...

Casualty from Seaworld

Plus I'm realising that I really like to design stuff like this. It thrills me to no end to see my pix end up on something real, like a Tshirt, or a piece of paper, and it thrills me more to see how much my friends like those pix.

But logistics and marketing issues frankly put me off. Hmmmmmm......

Tuition Tales

I know I should be doing something constructive with my time online, but I developed a headache during accounts tuition with Juls ( Gee, what a coincidence ) and now I don't feel like doing anything at all.

So... Excerpts from tuition:

B's late arrival ( My student ) meant that when Juls came at 12, she was able to have tuition with him at the same time. Something I'm not sure should be repeated again.

"Right, Juls, what goes onto a profit and loss statement?"

"Er, expenses?"

"Ok, what else?"

"Assets?"

"Go on."

"Liabilities?"

"Anymore?"

"Drawings?"

"Anything else?"

"Nope."

"Sure?"

"Yup."

*WHACK* "WHAT BLOODY RUBBISH!! SINCE WHEN DO ASSETS AND LIABILITIES GO INTO PROFIT AND LOSS??"

"OW! OW! OW!" As I pinched him repeatedly on the arm, B starts to laugh, and I glare sideways at her. She lowers her head quickly and suddenly becomes very engrossed in her work.

Later on,
"Right, B! Since Juls is doing profit and loss, you may as well revise your profit and loss at the same time as he does!"

"WHAT? But I forgot my format alreadY!"

"Well, then this is a good time to start revising, right?"

"ARGH! Juls! Lend me your notes! Quick!" and she starts pulling at his laptop screen, where he has his notes on display.

*GLARE*

"Er...... Sorry, but if I do, she'll pinch me again."

Plus the abundance of food. Since B didn't eat breakfast before coming, she bought up a pack of Bugles. And when she found out I still had chocolate biscuits in the fridge, "I want! I want!"

"Finish your questions first!"

Grumble grumble...

Then Juls came, and one of the first thing he said was, "Hey, I'm hungry, you got any more biscuits in the fridge?"

"YAY! BISCUITS!"

And there go half the pack of dark choc Tim Tams.... *Sob* Plus her pack of Bugles, and all the ice I had. Next lesson it's Juls' turn to buy the snacks.....

My first sales!

My first sales for postcards go to Yenn.... Arigato Gozaimasu...

My first Tee sale goes to Jubilee14..... Arigato Gozaimasu.....

Doomo Arigato Gozaimasu to both......

And as a preview, here is the tee for Jubilee...

The front:

And the back: ( Yup, Don't Just Be a Black Sheep )

Coming up with more psychedelic sheep designs. I'm hung up on them for some reason...

Have also printed Yenn's cards, but now having stupid problems with printer formatting. The cards came out slightly wai, which resulted in more curses from me to the printer. ( I know cursing at it doesn't always work, but I could always try, and it makes me feel better )

Also went shopping last night at the Stationery shop at Funan for more supplies. Almost went high at the sight of all that stationery. Tshirt paper! Postcard paper! 50 different kinds of notebooks! Sketchbooks! Paints! *Pant pant pant* Now you know just how much of a geek I am... And if you think this is bad, you should have seen me at Artfriends at Bras Basah...

Does Piracy Kill Creativity?

That's what the following postcards will have you believe:

The postcards were printed by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, ( Who else? ) and also by Power 98 ( The Official Hip Station ). The words on the back of both cards read:

"The movies you watch with friends on Sunday afternoon. Those cult movies you see at midnight. The music video you're addicted to, and that cool sound you party to on Saturday night. They all started with an idea, from someone just like you. To make your life more fun. Do the right thing. Each time you reject piracy, you encourage creativity. Whose weekend do you think that will affect? Yours. Be creative. Be original. Be hip."

Now this is the strangest premise for rejecting piracy I've ever seen. That piracy kills creativity?

Let's get one thing clear. People aren't going to stop producing art because they don't make money from it. Well, some people might, but to insinuate that piracy would bring about the downfall of the entire art sphere is bringing it a mite too far. Art has already survived for almost thousands of years, ever since civilisation was first formed. Through prehistory, ( You think cavemen paid to see those paintings? ) BC, and to AD.

Throughout this period, it has survived decay, persecution, recessions, wars, and natural disasters. I hardly think that piracy can bring about a complete stop to all this.

In fact, the ones that have been most affected by the onset of piracy were the major record companies. I don't even think the major movie companies were that affected, because the revenue they earn from movies pales in comparison to the amounts made by merchandising and DVD sales. The partners in the RIAA also consist of the major record companies, because it's just so much cheaper to download them than to buy the entire CD.

But does that mean that people won't do music anymore? Look around you, and you will see that music, and the love thereof, still exists in many quarters. Just last night, at the Esplanade, I watched a band from West Malaysia perform free by the waterfront. On the way home, I switched on my radio to listen to music on the way home. At home, I strum a few chords on the guitar.

People love music. And people who truly love music will not by deterred by piracy. In fact, there are many independent bands nowadays who exist for the pure sake of composing and performing music. They play in bars, the odd public space, or they post their songs on the Internet. Piracy hasn't deterred these people, nor has it deterred people like me, who enjoy the odd piano piece or guitar piece once in a while.

Who are the ones deterred by piracy? The ones who get into it for the love of the money, of the publicity. These are the ones who stand to lose the most from falling CD sales. Boybands like North, *shudder* 5 pretty boys from Australia, who can sing at a pretty decent standard, and whose first single was a cover of an old song. ( Didn't someone tell them that the trend for covers had died long ago? ) I'm hoping that one day Britney Spears will also drop out of the industry for the same reason.

And if you look at CD sales, artistes like Nelly and Norah Jones are still making music and making money from it as well. Both artistes have been recently acclaimed for the revival of the music industry.Cries of "They're killing us!" from the record companies have been exposed for the pathetic squeals they really are. People are still buying CDs, just not buying the stuff that they think we like.

Somewhere out there, there are a bunch of music marketing and artiste execs looking for jobs, and wondering where they went wrong.

And that's just the record industry. Look at the rest of the art world, and art pretty much still survives. People still draw, paint, sing, compose, dance, act. If nothing, I think that piracy actually encourages creativity.

Looking at an example i'm more familiar with, check out www.megatokyo.com Fred Gallagher has created a fantastic comic which is posted free on the Internet for everyone to download. Gosh! What a travesty! Is he still in business? Yes, Megatokyo has survived, gained a cult following, [yours included] and he and his newlywed wife have gone into maintaining the website fulltime.

So how do they survive? Though the online comic is free, they also sell book versions of it to stores all around the world. [copies can even be found in Kino] They also travel the states, promoting their comics at conventions nationwide, and they have an online store selling related merchandise. Posting their comic free for viewing means they have to come up with alternative sources of revenue, which they have done admirably.

The key thing here is quality. And not just product quality, but also brand quality. They've created a comic that is loved by many, and that has became a brand on its own. For that, people are willing to pay for their products. [except me, poor starving artist, though I'll love to get my hands on the books] It's sorta like me giving out my Funny Farm designs free, but if you want them on postcards or T-shirts, pay me and I'll do them for you. [hint hint]

I guess if you really love what you're doing, and you hand out good stuff, there will be people who would like to pay for what you do. If you just want the quick buck, then people will sense it, and they won't be convinced to buy your stuff either.

In the end, piracy can only be good for creativity.
